By The Wholesale Method team. Reviewed September 28, 2026.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Wholesale | Private label |
|---|---|---|
| Whose brand is it? | The existing brand's | Yours |
| Is there existing demand? | Usually, since the product already sells | You have to prove it for your version |
| Where does most of the work go? | Supplier outreach, approvals, product research, buying decisions | Product design, manufacturing, branding, listing, launch, ads |
| Who controls the listing? | Often shared with other sellers of the same product | Usually just you |
| What is the main money risk? | Buying stock that sells slower or cheaper than planned | Manufacturing a product that does not sell |
| What protects you? | Supplier relationships, good records, careful buying | Brand differentiation and a defensible listing |
| Can you sell the business later? | Harder, since you do not own the brands | Easier, since you own a brand |

What the work looks like in wholesale
Most of your week goes to finding products that fit your numbers, contacting brands and distributors, handling applications and documents, and deciding how much to buy. Because other sellers may offer the same product, price and stock levels can change quickly. Amazon also expects you to be able to show your products came from a legitimate source. (Amazon wholesale guidance)
What the work looks like in private label
You pick a product idea, find a manufacturer, develop samples, design packaging, create the listing and images, and pay for advertising to get early sales. The upside is control and ownership. The downside is that the first order is a bet on a product nobody has bought from you yet.
Questions to decide between them
- Do you enjoy supplier relationships and numbers more than design and marketing?
- Would you rather compete on price and availability, or on your own brand?
- How much money could you lose on a first inventory order without real harm?
- How many hours a week can you give it, and at what times?
- Do you want to own a brand long term, or run a buying operation?
There is no winning answer. It depends on the work you would actually enjoy doing every week.
Can you do both?
Some sellers start with one and add the other later. Starting with both at once usually splits your attention and your cash, so most people do better choosing one to learn first.
Where we stand
The Wholesale Method teaches wholesale, so we have a clear interest here. We still think private label is the right choice for some people, especially those who want to build a brand and are comfortable with marketing. If you are comparing specific programs, see our comparison pages, including Grow With FBA and Amazing Selling Machine, which teach brand building.
