What is Amazon wholesale? How the model actually works
By The Wholesale Method team. Reviewed September 28, 2026.
How the model works, step by step
- Find a product worth investigating. You look for established products that customers already buy, then check whether there is room for another seller at a price that still leaves a margin.
- Get legitimate supply. You open an account with the brand or one of its authorized distributors. Amazon's guidance says branded products should come directly from the brand or from its direct distributors or wholesalers, and it recommends checking a supplier's locations, references, and reputation before buying. (Amazon wholesale guidance)
- Confirm you can sell it. Some products and categories need approval before you can list them. Amazon shows these limits when you try to list an item. (Amazon wholesale guidance)
- Buy a sensible quantity. Amazon's advice is to buy enough to earn the wholesale discount, but not more than you can sell. Minimum order quantities decide a lot here. (Amazon wholesale guidance)
- Fulfill orders. Most wholesale sellers send stock to Amazon's warehouses through Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), though you can also ship orders yourself.
- Review and reorder. You track what each product actually earned after fees and decide whether to reorder, adjust, or stop.
What wholesale is not
- It is not private label. You are reselling someone else's brand, not creating your own. See Amazon wholesale vs private label.
- It is not retail arbitrage. Arbitrage usually means buying discounted stock from stores. Wholesale means an ongoing account with a supplier, with invoices and documentation.
- It is not passive. Supplier outreach, product research, purchasing, and inventory decisions take steady work, especially at the start.
Why documentation matters
Because you are selling another company's brand, you need to be able to show your stock is authentic. Amazon's guidance points to invoices that list the supplier, the products, your name and address matching your seller account, and a recent date, and it mentions a brand authorization letter for branded goods. (Amazon wholesale guidance) Supplier permission and Amazon selling eligibility are two different things. You can have a supplier account and still need approval to list a product.
The numbers you have to understand
A product can sell well and still lose money. For every product, you need to know the purchase cost, Amazon's referral fee, fulfillment costs, shipping to Amazon, and an allowance for returns. Amazon's referral fees vary by category, and it publishes its selling plan and fee structure on its pricing page. A few dollars per unit may be fine or may be too thin, depending on how fast it sells, how much cash it ties up, and how stable the price is. That judgment is most of the job.
Who wholesale tends to suit
Wholesale tends to suit people who like research and numbers, are comfortable contacting suppliers, and would rather work with products that already have demand than build a brand from scratch. It still needs inventory money, patience with supplier replies, and time every week.
Common questions
Do I need a business to sell wholesale on Amazon? Most suppliers expect to work with a registered business and may ask for tax documents before opening an account. Check what applies in your state.
Can I start with a small budget? You can start learning with no budget at all. Buying inventory is where money is needed, and the right amount depends on the supplier's minimum orders and your own risk tolerance.
Is wholesale less risky than other models? Not automatically. It removes product development risk but adds supplier, eligibility, and pricing risk.
