Can you start Amazon wholesale with a full-time job?
By The Wholesale Method team. Reviewed September 28, 2026.
Where the hours actually go
In the early months, most time goes to activities that can be done in evenings and weekends:
- Product research: reviewing products, sales signals, fees, and competition.
- Supplier outreach: finding brands and distributors, sending emails, filling out applications.
- Paperwork: setting up your business, seller account, and supplier accounts.
- Buying decisions: running the numbers before any order.
Once stock is selling, time shifts toward reorders, checking prices, handling shipments to Amazon, and bookkeeping.
What is hard to do around a job
- Supplier calls during business hours. Many suppliers work 9 to 5. Email helps, but some conversations need a call. A lunch break or occasional time off often covers it.
- Fast reactions to price changes. If several sellers share a listing, prices can move quickly. Repricing tools help, but you still need to check in.
- Receiving and prepping stock. Using Amazon's fulfillment service, or a prep center, means you are not packing boxes at night.

This is an example, not a requirement. Your schedule depends on your job, family, and energy. The point is that fixed blocks beat good intentions.
Protecting your job and your money
- Check your employment agreement for rules about outside businesses or conflicts of interest.
- Keep business money separate from personal money from day one.
- Start with orders you can afford to be wrong about. Your first purchases are part of learning.
- Do not plan around income you have not earned yet. Build evidence from real sales before making bigger decisions.
Signs it is working
You are sending supplier emails every week, you have a list of products you have actually evaluated, and you can explain the numbers on anything you buy. Those habits matter more early on than any single sale.
Signs it is not the right time
You cannot find two or three consistent hours a week, you would need to borrow money for inventory, or your job is in a period where it needs everything you have. Waiting is a reasonable decision.
